Learn About Sirius Satellite Radio
It's Easy to Learn about Sirius Satellite Radio.  There are 2 Brands or companies offering it in the U.S.:
  • Sirius Satellite Radio
  • XM Radio
They each offer 65+ music stations and 60 or so other channels. All the music is commercial free. Most of the other channels are commercial free too. Talk stations have sponsors or commercials. Both are $12.95 per month, no contract, no credit check and they offer discounts for signing up for prepaid service (3, 6, 9, 12 months or Lifetime - see specific brand for details).

If you are looking for Satellite Radio to use overseas (Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East) you need to look at WorldSpace, as it is the only international satellite radio.  XM and Sirius do not work over there.

2. How is your programming different from regular radio? SIRIUS differs from regular radio in several ways.

SIRIUS is unique because we stay true to the artists and their music by broadcasting 100% commercial-free music. So, unlike traditional radio, all of our original music channels have no commercials ever!

SIRIUS offers original programming not recycled radio. Our original music channels play songs from the most popular to the obscure, and everything in between. From crunch-core metal to spoken word, from bubble-gum pop to vintage jazz we've got what you want and more. And if you're looking for a more intimate experience, our national broadcast studio hosts hundreds of exclusive live interviews and performances you won't hear anywhere else.

SIRIUS also features news and sports from content providers like CNBC, FOX News, C-SPAN, NPR, PRI, and ESPN, among others.

3. What is Statistical Multiplexing? Our Statistical Multiplexing technology dynamically allocates bandwidth to the channels that need it most. SIRIUS is the only satellite radio provider that does this. What it means for you is better overall sound quality and superior sound resolution, so you hear the music/programming the way it was intended.

4. Where does the name SIRIUS come from? Sirius pronounced "Seeer-E-us" is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major and the Northern Hemisphere. It was named after the ancient Egyptian god Osirus, who was represented pictographically as a dog, giving Sirius its more familiar name: the Dog Star.

5. Where are the SIRIUS studios located? The SIRIUS national broadcast studio complex is located in Rockefeller Center, in the heart of NYC. It is one of the largest, most sophisticated, digital broadcasting facilities in the world. Our complex houses state-of-the-art production studios for our over 120 channels, plus four performance spaces for artists and musicians, and a comprehensive digital library currently housing over half a million songs.

6. Where is SIRIUS stock listed? SIRIUS Satellite Radio trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker SIRI.

16. I just bought a second receiver. Can I activate it online, as I did with the first one? To ensure that you're taking advantage of the special $6.99 monthly rate for an additional receiver, please contact Customer Care for activation. While the first receiver can be activated online without problems, additional units demand the attention of a representative.

17. My radio is broken, but I'm still being charged. What gives? SIRIUS has no way of monitoring the functional status of your radio. If you are encountering technical difficulties with your hardware, we suggest that you contact its manufacturer or consult your Owner's Manual.

18. Hey! My signal dropped out! While we do have in place an extensive network of ground repeaters in many metropolitan areas, factors such as microwaves and physical obstruction (bridges and tunnels) may temporarily disrupt signal reception. This problem is largely held at bay by the four-second buffer created by slight broadcasting delays between our two satellites orbiting over the continental United States. In addition, SIRIUS has in place an extensive ground network of repeaters, which rebroadcast our signal in densely populated areas.

19. How can I find out more information about the Service Terms & Conditions? Read our Service Terms & Conditions.

20. How do I get in touch with SIRIUS Customer Care? Contact SIRIUS Customer Careby completing this form or calling 1-888-539-SIRIUS (7474).

21. What are the basic hardware and software requirements for using the SIRIUS website? For the best experience, we recommend:

  • PC: Windows 98, or NT 4 and above
  • Mac: OS 9.0 or higher
  • Connection Speed: 56kbps modem or higher
  • Browser: Netscape and Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, AOL version 5.0 or higher
  • Media Player: Broadband connection recommended

22. What are the hardware and software requirements for the media player? To listen to our music channels online, we recommend a broadband Internet connection (T1, DSL or ISDN line, or a cable modem), Windows Media Player version 6.0 or higher, and either Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. Unfortunately, we are unable to support other browsers at this time. Free online streaming access available only for personal accounts, not businesses. You can download the Windows Media Player by visiting Microsoft's Download Center.

23. Does your site require Macromedia Flash? Flash is not required for using our website, but we do suggest downloading it from Macromedia to enhance your overall viewing experience on Sirius.com.

24. Does the SIRIUS website use cookies? Yes, we use cookies in certain sections of the site where it helps specific applications on our site function properly. If you have deactivated cookies for your web browser, you will need to reconfigure your system to accept them if you wish to fully experience our entire website. For information concerning privacy issues, please read our Privacy Policy.

25. Is the "Last 5 Songs You Heard" for the last 5 songs on the current channel, or last 5 songs I actually listened to while surfing around? These are the last five songs you've actually heard from beginning to end. In order for the song name and artist to enter the "Last 5 Songs You Heard" list, you must listen to a song from the very beginning. Otherwise, the player cannot add the song you heard to the list.

26. Why don't I see a song title or artist name in the player? Song title and artist name data is married with the stream of music by the Windows Media Encoder. When this data arrives at your PC, it is displayed using an ActiveX control. However, because all Macintosh browsers and many PC browsers do not provide ActiveX support for the Windows Media Player, that information cannot be displayed when those browsers are utilized.

27. What's an ActiveX control? ActiveX is a set of technologies created by Microsoft for sharing information among different programs. The control is simply the use of ActiveX. In the case of sirius.com, the ActiveX control is sharing song and artist data found in the Windows Media Player plug-in with your browser. It is similar to a Java applet, except that ActiveX controls have full access to the Windows operating system only they do NOT work with Macintosh browsers and certain PC browsers.

28. Sometimes the Title and Artist Name do not appear, why not? This is because the title and artist name are sent one time during a song at the beginning. If you miss that part of the song, you will not get this information.

29. Can I arrange the "Music" face to place "Pop" next to "Jazz" since those are the genres I listen to? Unfortunately, no and much of the issue behind doing this is because of the multitude of web browsers out there. SIRIUS subscribers come from all walks of life and all areas of the country with all kinds of computers (not just the latest). Things like drag and drops, as well aspresets would only work on a handful of browsers. We try to make the SIRIUS player as widely available as possible.

30. What happens when I press 'BUY CD'? The SIRIUS Player continues playing your channel and it opens a new window to BarnesandNoble.com that should land you on a search page with the album you're looking for.

31.
Can I stream SIRIUS Sports, News and Entertainment programming? Due to certain limitations, we are unable to make those channels available live on the SIRIUS Player. However, you can listen to the SIRIUS OutQ channel and Lynn Samuels on SIRIUS Left // 143.

32.
I have been listening all day, and there is nothing listed under "Song You're Hearing" or "Last 5 Songs You Heard". What's going on? Most likely you have not listened to the very beginning of a song (when the song and artist information is sent). Unfortunately, if you miss that information, we have no way of knowing what song you're listening to and cannot put that information up on your player. Since this is the same method that populates the "Last 5 Songs You Heard", that would explain why it is empty.

33. I'm an AOL user. Can I still use the SIRIUS Player? Yes, the Media Player is compatible with most recent versions of AOL. Simply ensure that you've disabled AOL's pop-up blocker before you try to listen. Additionally, if you're a dialup user, expect a short delay while the channel buffers.

34. What browsers do you support? We support the following browsers in the listed operating systems: Windows IE 4.x and higher Netscape 7.x Netscape 6.x Firefox 1.0 Mac OSX IE Safari Mac OS9 Internet Explorer Media Player Versions Windows: For best results, upgrade to Windows Media Player 9. Mac: Must upgrade to latest version of Windows Media Player. Additional Browser support may be added in the future. For the best listening experience we recommend updating your Windows Media Player plugin to version 9.

35. Why don't you support Opera? These browsers and operating systems cannot support the Windows Media Player plugin the way in which we must use it. We have tried to accommodate as many different browser types and operating systems as possible.

36. Why does the SIRIUS Player reload every time I touch a button or change a channel? Due to the way our media player operates, it is necessary for the player to communicate with the server every time you change what channel you are listening to.

37. I hear there is a smaller player, but I can't see it as a guest, why not? That's a bonus that we give only to our subscribers.

38. Why does the player always say it's "ready" when I click on a channel, but no music is playing? In order to ensure that the SIRIUS Player functions properly, you must set your browser to cache pages either automatically or to never cache them at all.

To do this in Internet Explorer, go to your browser's "Tools" menu, click on "Internet Options," then "Settings," then select "Never" or "Automatically," click "Apply" and then "Okay." This should resolve the problem.

For Netscape on Windows, go to your browser's "Edit" menu, choose "Preferences," select "Advanced," then select "Cache." Under "Compare the page in the cache to the page on the network" select "Every time I view the page" for best results

For Internet Explorer on Mac go to your browser's "Explorer" menu, choose "Preferences," then click on "Advanced." Under "Update Pages" select "Always" for best results.

These settings may vary from browser to browser.

39.
Why does the SIRIUS Player keep telling me that I need to download the Windows Media Player even though I already have it? There are a few possibilities:

One, it may be that you are not using version 6.0 or higher of the Windows Media Player. If this is the case, please visit Microsoft's Download Center in order to download the latest version.
Two, the Windows Media Player is not compatible with all browsers. If you would like to listen to our channels we recommend that you use either Netscape 4.7 or Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

40. Why does the channel keep re-buffering? This could be because of your Internet connection speed (56K or lower) or because of excess Internet traffic. You can try waiting a few minutes or accessing the channel later when there might not be as much traffic.

41. Why does the channel keep closing down? Your channel most likely shuts down because of network traffic. If this problem continues or occurs frequently at certain times, please contact Customer Care with this form.

42. How does the sound quality on the SIRIUS Player compare to the sound quality in a vehicle or at home? We want your online listening experience to be the best it can be. However, because of bandwidth constraints, the sound quality isn't the same digital-quality sound that you'll experience with SIRIUS in your vehicle.

43. Is the content you are streaming the same as what I will hear when I subscribe? Our 100% commercial-free music are available online and are the same as what SIRIUS listeners hear in their vehicles or homes. The SIRIUS news, sports and entertainment channels are not available online, but you may preview samples of their content on the pages themselves.

44. Okay, the SIRIUS Player still isn't working. There may be several reasons for this. For one, we suggest that you disable all pop-up blockers (the Google toolbar, Norton Internet Security) at the moment you attempt to launch the SIRIUS Player. Patch your version of Windows Media Player to the current standard. If you are using Real Networks Real Player, disable it for the duration of your listening. All of these things can potentially interfere with the SIRIUS Player.

45.
Am I able to get my local radio stations if I have SIRIUS? SIRIUS will not prevent you from listening to your local AM/FM radio stations.

46. Will new vehicles have SIRIUS already built in? SIRIUS has agreements to install AM/FM/SAT radios in Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Volvo, Mazda, Dodge, Jeep, Volkswagen, Audi, Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. Please refer to our Auto Dealer Locator page for more info.

47. What if I want SIRIUS in more than one vehicle? You will need a separate subscription for each vehicle, but you can put all of your subscriptions under one account and receive one bill. Also see our portable Plug & Play systems.

48. What can I do if I sell my car and want to transfer the service to my new vehicle? You must remove the SIRIUS system from the car and install it in the new car. For more information about transferring your service to another vehicle, please contact Customer Care using this form or by calling 1-888-539-SIRIUS (7474).

49. Can I get SIRIUS service for my boat, plane, RV, or truck? Yes, our new SIRIUS Plug & Play systems let you connect wherever you are: at home, in your car, on a boat or truck and more. See more information on how to listen to SIRIUS everywhere.
